People always say cats are super nimble, agile, and have lightning-fast reaction times—supposedly even faster than a snake! Whenever my cats managed to escape the house over the years, I started noticing subtle differences in how they moved, reacted, and maneuvered. I held onto a sneaking suspicion that feline agility isn't a one-size-fits-all deal. Recently, when I bought a floor-to-ceiling cat tower, it completely confirmed my suspicions!
I felt the urge to give them a bit of extra adventure indoors, even though they already have a fairly large outdoor enclosure and free-roam access to the entire house. They were all super curious while we were building it, watching us fix every piece. But the real moment of truth came once it was fully erected!
Here is what happened with each cat:
1. Lily
Lily was an absolute ninja. She darted through every single level without hesitation and found herself a cozy spot in the transparent hemisphere bowl in no time. If the cats ever escaped the house, Lily would seize her moment, leap away into the distance, and you’d never be able to catch her.
2. Kobe
Kobe took his sweet time exploring and sniffing every little inch. He would jump off, walk around, and try climbing again from a different angle. After a while, he also found a spot to his liking and curled up into the basket—completely oblivious to the fact that it’s actually a bit too small for him! If Kobe escaped, you could still catch him; he can climb, but he takes his time.
3. Tommy
Tommy was totally uninterested in all these high-altitude shenanigans. By the time we finished setting it up, he had already retreated to his ultimate happy place: on my 37cm thick king-sized bed!
Tommy wouldn't even want to escape the house! You may think I’m exaggerating, but it’s true! There was this one time when the front door was accidentally left wide open. When I came back, Lily had gone off gallivanting into the distance (we found her later, thankfully). Kobe was investigating in slow-motion right at the front of the house. And Tommy? Tommy was happily sitting inside the house, just watching Kobe from the safety of the hallway. That’s how contented he is being a true home-boy.
4. Louie
And then there’s Louie. Poor Louie tried to investigate, but he couldn't jump past the very first level! I wanted to help him out, so I gave him a gentle lift up to the third level. Turns out, he just couldn't deal with the height. His balance was so darn poor that he clumsily fell right back down to the ground. If Louie ever escaped, it would strictly depend on the height of the obstacle—this boy genuinely cannot jump!
So, are all cats born acrobats? Definitely not in my house! While Lily holds down the ninja reputation, Louie proves that some cats are just endearingly awkward ground-dwellers.
