Do Cats Miss Us When We’re Away?

I’ve always thought cats have a special way of making us wonder what’s going on in their little heads. Unlike dogs, they don’t always show their feelings in big, obvious ways. They’re quieter about it. More subtle. And if you’ve ever felt like loving a cat is like living through a slow-burn love story, while dogs are more “fast and furious,” you’re not alone.

Cats are very tuned in to routine. They know the sounds, smells, and habits of the home, and they notice when something feels different. So when we go away, even for a short time, it can leave them feeling a little out of sorts.

I’ve seen this so clearly in my own cats whenever I come back from a trip:

  • Lily is the vocal one — she gives me the loooooogest meow, as if she has been saving up all her thoughts (and complains) just for that moment.
  • Kobe follows me around and demands headbutts, making sure I know I’ve been missed.
  •  Louie becomes extra sticky and will choose to sleep with me, even though he might not usually do that.
  • Tommy gently paws at me, like he is asking for just the right amount of attention to feel reassured again.

Each of them shows it differently, but the message is the same. They noticed I was gone and they do miss me! That’s why I always try to give them extra attention and extra love whenever I am back.

One thing that seems to solve almost all the neediness, at least for the moment, is treats. Good treats like raw salmon, boiled chicken, or even a little dollop of yoghurt can work wonders. After that, if I just sit down and nap with them or watch a movie, they usually relax and slowly go back to their usual selves.

And maybe that’s the sweetest part of all.

Because even if cats don’t show their feelings in the same way we do, they still find their own little ways to say, “I miss you.” A meow, a headbutt, a soft paw, or a little extra closeness can mean more than words ever could.
